Calendar Systems Basics

•••

Humans have devised different ways to keep track of the passage of time over the centuries. Let me tell you about some of the key calendar systems out there:

  • Gregorian calendar. which is by far the most widely used system globally. This is the calendar that most of us are familiar with, with its 365 days in a regular year and a leap year every four years (with a few exceptions, but we won’t get too deep into the technicalities). It’s a remarkably accurate system, and that’s a big part of why it’s become the global standard.
  • Julian calendar. Developed back in the days of the Roman Empire, the Julian calendar was a pretty good attempt at keeping track of the solar year, but it had a slightly less accurate leap year system.
  • Lunar calendars. Are focused entirely on the phases of the moon. These lunar-based calendars are still used in certain cultural and religious contexts, like the Islamic calendar.

Calculator Use Cases

Here are some examples of why you would want to use the days from today calculator:

  • Planning Deadlines. Determine the date a project or task needs to be completed.
  • Scheduling Events. Calculate the date for a future meeting or appointment.
  • Tracking Shipments. Estimate the arrival date of a package.
  • Counting Down to a Specific Event. Figure out the exact date of a future birthday, holiday, or vacation.

What’s Wrong With Pixels

When it comes to representing dates, there are actually quite a few different conventions out there. The two most common ones are the MM/DD/YYYY format, which is popular in the US (like 03/15/2023), and the DD/MM/YYYY format, which is more common in Europe and other parts of the world (15/03/2023).

And then you’ve got the ISO standard of YYYY-MM-DD (2023-03-15), which is great for sorting and organizing dates in a logical way.

But it doesn’t stop there – things can get even more complicated when you start factoring in time. Some regions use the 24-hour clock, where the day starts at 00:00 and goes all the way up to 23:59. Others stick to the good old AM/PM system that we’re all familiar with.
